With its $1.5 million price tag, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 has to be worth every dollar. It speaks nothing but superlatives. The 1001 horsepower its W16 engine generates makes this production car the most powerful to date. And yes, it is the most expensive sports car today.
Named in honor of the French driver who bagged the coveted trophy of the gruelling1939 24 Hours Le Mans while driving a Bugatti, it is quite a fit for this awesome car. The endurance, perseverance and determination of that iconic driver reflects the same qualities of the team that developed this never before seen, and perhaps never to be duplicated, car.
The rise of the Veyron name in the automobile world did not really go as smoothly. Two years after acquiring the rights to the Bugatti brand, former Volkswagen CEO Ferdinand Piech proclaimed that the company will be unveiling the Veyron: a road worthy sports car that will be available in the market by 2003. Promising to top even the famous McLaren F1, they failed to deliver as time expired.
The early prototypes of the Veyron did not meet the engineering standards that it promised to possess. And worse, they suffered several embarrassing public displays and demonstrations that the company took a lot of heat from car reviewers. Eager to avoid a similar predicament, the company undertook radical management changes that allowed it to refocus its engineering design efforts to live up to the promise of delivering the dream sports car. And slowly but surely, the visionaries of Bugatti did just that. When the first revitalized Veyron came out of the production plant, it was just as advertised.
Top Bugatti officials announced that it will only construct 300 of these automobile engineering wonders. And due to its sheer few numbers, the Veyron will only be seen on the road by a very fortunate few and much less will have the chance to drive one.
