Paradox is always attractively confusing: two concepts or features or simply, things which are naturally opposite to each other, yet equally in need of each other that neither can exist without another being around. Such is the concept of GM’s most pretentious and sumptuous project: the 2010 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid. As the company insists on keeping all lines of productions green, the technology may still hinder such noble intention. With this SUV monster, the case is that the 6.0L Ecotec V8, with 332hp output, still notoriously devours the fossil fuels it’s trying to safe. Only now that such monstrosity is accompanied by two isolated electric motors and a variable transmission, also electronic, that becomes the basic platform of GM’s hybrid model.
The hybrid system is known to produce the golden ratio that strives for the efficient output, measured from gas-engine-assisting-electronic motors, to compensate the weight of supplementary batteries needed to operate them. In Escalade Hybrid system, or any system alike, such efficiency means the 300-volt Nickle-metal-hydride (NiMH) of a recharging system that takes over the energy during the process of breaking. The V8, while running low or starting slow, will cut the power and gives the job instead to the electric motors. Exactly of a golf cart – only the biggest, weightiest, and most lavish in the world – equipped with the tranquility of 4 cylinder, the power of 8, and, when necessary, the towing capacity.
Hybrid normally offers MPG’s improvement. In the case of Escalade Hybrid, it still bids for an extension, at least, in the city traffic. With 21 for city and 22 for highway, it makes a distinguish 9 MPG advancement over all 2009 gas model, yet a not so breathtaking of 3 MPG highway improvement. Considering the recent gas cost, the charge you pay for the Escalade is similar with the green ability you get while forfeiting too much of nature’s comfort.
